Cistus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Cistaceae, which includes around 20-30 species of evergreen shrubs that are native to the Mediterranean region, as well as western and central Asia. The most commonly known species is Cistus ladanifer, also known as gum rockrose or labdanum, which is widely cultivated for its essential oil.
Cistus has a long history of medicinal use. The essential oil extracted from the leaves and stems of some species is used in traditional medicine for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. The oil is also used in the perfume industry and as a fixative in soaps and cosmetics. Additionally, some Cistus species are used as ornamental plants in gardens and landscaping, as they are drought-tolerant and require little maintenance.
Majority of the cistus is growing in the western regions of Turkiye and being exported to the world. Western regions has the best climate and soil conditions for the highest quality of cistus to grow.
The harvest season of cistus is April. The cistus harvested in Turkiye is wild collection. It is important to harvest cistus before the flower parts grow up.
